A significant wildfire on the Greek island of Evia has compelled the evacuation of a minimum of two villages and a monastery as smoke from the wind-fanned blaze blanketed the capital, Athens, additional south.

Authorities on Tuesday evacuated some 500 residents from the villages of Kontodespoti and Makrimalli because the flames neared properties, officers mentioned.

The monastery of Panagia Makrymallis was evacuated first as a precaution.

“There are flames throughout and it is troublesome to breathe … home yards are on fireplace,” Yiorgos Psathas, Dirfys-Messapia mayor, advised state broadcaster ERT.

“We are going to order extra evacuations if the necessity arises,” he added.
