A significant wildfire on the Greek island of Evia has compelled the evacuation of a minimum of two villages and a monastery as smoke from the wind-fanned blaze blanketed the capital, Athens, additional south.
Authorities on Tuesday evacuated some 500 residents from the villages of Kontodespoti and Makrimalli because the flames neared properties, officers mentioned.
The monastery of Panagia Makrymallis was evacuated first as a precaution.
“There are flames throughout and it is troublesome to breathe … home yards are on fireplace,” Yiorgos Psathas, Dirfys-Messapia mayor, advised state broadcaster ERT.
“We are going to order extra evacuations if the necessity arises,” he added.
Greater than 200 firefighters have been battling the blaze backed by 75 fireplace vehicles, 5 water-bombing helicopters and 6 planes. The crews face rugged terrain, hills and poor visibility complicating air operations.
“The flames are 20-30 metres excessive…you may’t even see the solar,” Panos Agiannitis, a volunteer firefighter on the scene, advised Athens municipal radio.
“I feared for my life … you can really feel the warmth 250 metres away,” he mentioned. “The one approach for this fireplace to be extinguished is when there’s nothing left to burn.”
No fatalities had been reported and the winds have been anticipated to subside within the night.
